What is skin oil actually for?

Where does sebum come from?

Why do some people produce more oil than others?

Oil production is driven largely by genetics and hormones, particularly androgens, which can make sebaceous glands more active. This is why oiliness often runs in families and why it shifts at puberty, and again at other hormonal turning points through life.

Genetics sets a kind of baseline. Some people are simply built with more active sebaceous glands, in the same way some people run warmer or sweat more. That baseline can be nudged by things like hormonal changes, certain medications, humidity and temperature, but it rarely gets rewritten completely.

Does oily skin cause acne?

Oil is one ingredient in acne, not the whole story. Breakouts form when oil, dead skin cells and bacteria combine inside a follicle in a way that triggers blockage and, sometimes, inflammation. Oily skin makes that combination more likely, but it is not the single cause on its own.

Plenty of people with oily skin get very few breakouts, and plenty of people with drier skin get plenty. Can oil production change over time?

Yes. Oil production tends to rise during puberty, can shift with menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or other hormonal changes, and sometimes increases again later in life for reasons that are not always obvious. It can also decrease with age as skin naturally produces less oil overall.

Is it possible to “turn off” oil production?

There is no way to switch oil production off entirely, and that would not be a good goal — skin needs some oil to stay healthy.
